1st 285 yards par 4

The 1st hole sums up Theydon and the lesson it teaches should remain with you throughout your round. Defence is the best form of attack. Certainly a birdie chance; you will not be happy with a bogey here.

The best golf hole on the course from any tee and you will be happy with a 5 here whatever the weather conditions. OB all the way down the left. A birdie 3 here is not only rare but will feel like an eagle. Only proper golf shots will reward good scores here.

Sensibly constructed downhill par 3 with good views across Theydon and Roding Valley. A birdie chance is begging but you will be more than happy with 3 here. Green slopes right to left therefore almost everything beyond the flag will putt left to right. Very fair hole.

Longest hole on the course, typically playing into the prevailing wind that makes it play even longer. This may be the only hole you decide to hit driver. Add to this a small green will give anyone finding the green in two would have played two cracking very

It was always said that a 5 scored here meant that you had to leave the course. Certainly the easiest hole on the course and rightly reflects SI 18, however, as usual for Theydon danger lurks for a shot

Thinking man’s hole. Dog leg left. In the days when the trees were in their infancy the line was straight over the corner with driver leaving you with a wedge, however, no longer as the trees have grown too high down left. Tee shot runs out at 238 yards from the back so you need to hit a shot off the tee to

A good hole. A good drive is essential preferably right of bunker at corner of dog leg. A perfect driver here with a slight draw will be rightly rewarded but it is a high risk shot as the fairway landing area is very small from the tee angle so some favour a 2-3 iron off back or even yellow

Always a good par 3. Recently lengthened in past 15 years makes it now a very good par 3 off the back. Prevailing wind will normally assist from the right. From the back you will need 170 yards on the fly circa 5 iron. Yellow tee can play between 6-8 iron. Any shot hit slightly

Dangerous dog leg left hole that requires respect albeit it is not very long. Fairway runs out at 210 yards from back therefore again some do not favour driver or 3 wood. Look to fade a 2-3 iron off the left trees with perhaps 4-5 iron if off the yellow tee. Ideal shot is placed

Always a tough par 4, this dogleg right hole has been lengthened over the years and made it increasingly a tougher hole. From the back the ideal line is tight to the trees on the right and preferably over the corner but on the fly this is a 222 yard hit but to clear the height of the increasing tree growth requires

Left is dead so normally favour a 3-4-5 iron tee shot hit at the bunkers and hope to get lucky as hitting right into the trees is not a disaster but you will invariably be blocked on your approach to the green. A flattish

Back to the “old nine” and a return to the Forest. Recent tree clearance may tempt you to have a go at this green from tee; don’t. It is 222 yards to fly the hedge that runs in front of the green and is normally into the prevailing wind (not that you will notice as

Good hole but again keep the driver in the bag. You will see the hole ahead of you from the tee. View the hole from the forward/ladies tees to get better feel of the landing area before teeing off. You will be teeing off with the prevailing wind off your right and you are dead if

 .... click for more.... 14th 322 yards par 4

Good dog leg left hole but again keep the driver/3 wood in the bag. Left is dead so favour 2-3 iron right of centre. Watch out for OOB in or over the stream down the right. Aim to get the ball to the corner of the dog leg leaving a 8-9 iron to the green. The 2nd shot

 .... click for more.... 15th 133 yards par 3

For most visitors viewing this hole for the first time it sets up as a short dogleg par 3! Ignore what the hole looks like and hit a solid high 8 iron (perhaps a 7 iron from the back or 9 iron from front tee) aiming

Again tempting to take out the driver given the yardage but again the odds are against you. From the back tee the club is no more than 6-7 iron and could even be 8 iron off yellow. The fall of the land kicks right. Do not be alarmed as right side of fairway attracts

A favourite hole from the back tees and this part of the course can be spectacular for Autumn colours. Two solid shots are required to reach the right to left sloping green that is always in good condition. From the tee you can see the hole in front of you aiming for

A Classic par 3 that takes some beating. Nightingale Brook nags down the right, greenside bunker guards right and OOB long is always in your mind when you are always hitting a long iron tee shot here being at least 4-5 iron from back. However, it can play 6-7 iron from yellow. Remember the
