The 1st hole sums up Theydon and the lesson it teaches should remain with
you throughout your round. Defence is the best form of attack. Certainly a
birdie chance; you will not be happy with a bogey here.
The prevailing wind from the Southwest normally plays a little behind you
off your right shoulder although the trees will shield the effect. You will
be tempted off the tee at seeing the 1st green “within reach”; a driver/3
wood is only a shot for Texas Scramble unless you wish to get frustration
off to a good start.
The line is just left of centre as you see the fairway (towards the grass
bunker) 20 paces left of the majestic oak tree in front of green. From the
back tee 207 yards on the correct line will put you in a ditch, therefore no
more than 5 iron is required off the back tee (7-8 iron off yellow).
If the tee shot is leaked right Nightingale Brook will normally
swallow the shot. Your 2nd shot from the ideal spot is normally no more than
wedge to a two-tier green (left side higher than right and far more
difficult on putting).
